Frequently asked questions.
What is Gender Affirming Care?
It is receiving each person as they are and as they identify at each moment.
It is understanding that gender identity and sexuality are not the same, neither are they binary.
It is understanding that a person’s expression of gender is an expression of their soul and can be very specific or mutable and both are valid.
It is understanding that our bodies and their parts do not define our gender or sexuality, however we live in a world in which we are asked to define both based on these terms.
It is understanding that gender in our current society has a hierarchy and that hierarchy contributes to gender based violence (see Sonya Renee Taylor, the ladder of bodily hierarchy).
It is understanding that gender based violence is a present reality in our world and affects all people, most recognizably those who are positioned on the lowest rungs of the ladder.
It is recognizing that this ladder is a social construct and in fact we are all souls, provided bodies and asked to express within very narrow confines, when the truth is our souls are divine, our bodies are capable and dynamic, and with affirmation we can adjust from a place of surviving to thriving.
